E.A.G.L.E. Traits of a Middle School Athlete
E – Effort
Middle school athletes give their best in every practice and game. They understand that hard work and persistence are more important than just winning.
A – Attitude
They maintain a positive and respectful attitude toward coaches, teammates, opponents, and themselves. They show sportsmanship in both victory and defeat.
G – Growth
They embrace challenges and learn from mistakes. They are always looking to improve their skills, mindset, and teamwork.
L – Leadership
They lead by example—on and off the field. Whether it’s encouraging a teammate or staying disciplined, they show responsibility and maturity.
E – Excellence
They strive for excellence in athletics, academics, and character. They understand that being a student-athlete means balancing both school and sports with integrity.
Calling All Student Athletes
Students in grades 6, 7, and 8 can participate, if eligible, in school athletics. Sports played at Paul R. Smith include:
- Football – one team, grades 6–8, begins in August
- Girls Volleyball – two teams: JV and Varsity
- Cheerleading – one team, grades 6–8, begins in August
- Boys Soccer – one team, grades 6–8, begins in October
- Girls Basketball – two teams: JV and Varsity, begins in October
- Girls Soccer – one team, grades 6–8, begins in January
- Boys Basketball – two teams: JV and Varsity, begins in January
- Girls Track – one team, grades 6–8, begins in March
- Boys Track – one team, grades 6–8, begins in March
Athletic Participation Requirements
- Athletic paperwork packets must be fully completed before a student can participate or try out. Physicals must be completed using the official packet; no other forms can be used. Paperwork is available in the front office or on the district athletics webpage: Middle School Athletics Forms.
- To be eligible to play, students must have a 2.0 grade point average from the previous semester. Sixth graders are automatically eligible for first semester sports.
- Student athletes who do not behave appropriately in school can be removed from the team.
- Parents and athletes must recognize that coaches make decisions over general team matters, including team selection, participation, and playing time.
- There is a fee to participate in athletics. The fee must be paid in order to play.
